Read 2 Succeed
Read to Succeed is an early learning initiative working with childcare centers to ensure that children at risk for school failure have the skills needed to be successful in Kindergarten and beyond. United Way has placed the Developmental Learning Materials curriculum in Preschool and PreKindergarten classrooms and provides training for the classroom teachers. Each center also has three family literacy workshops yearly to help families understand how to help their children become successful readers. Each family receives a quality child’s book at these workshops and a meal for their family is provided. Read to Succeed also provides a fully stocked lending library for families and funds a Literacy Coach in each center. Children’s progress is evaluated by teacher observation and data from assessment instruments.
Book’Em is a wonderful organization that supplies books to centers to be given to children. If you would like more information about them please visit their website Book’Em.
.As part of the Early Reading First Grant, Fannie Battle offers at least four Family Literacy Workshops per year. The purpose of the workshops is to address early literacy skills, promote family reading, and emphasize the importance of being involved in their child’s education. The workshops are developed by Jeanne McGehee, our literacy coordinator, based on grant requirements and staff and parent recommendations. She enlists the expertise of the Metro Public Library, Vanderbilt/Peabody professors, Metro Nashville Public Schools, and other education professionals and organizations. Attendance averages 75% and includes family education, childcare, dinner, books, and incentive prizes. Topics requested by parents include child development, housing, and how to enroll in Kindergarten and magnet schools.
